Yoga Shala for Edakkad Beach Houses - North Kerala

Yoga in Edakkad, Kannur, North Kerala.

A beautiful place to be!

Construction is underway for a new purpose built Yoga Shala close to the Beach Houses in Edakkad, Kannur, North Kerala. Construction commenced December 2009.

Watch it grow from the beginning.

A small existing building is to be removed to make way for a stronger construction which will house two ayurveda rooms, a staff rest room and shower room + store rooms. The new Yoga Shala will be on the upper floor and will have shaded exercise area and changing facilities with showers.

We have been very careful to make sure no trees have to be felled.

This coconut tree will have its roots bridged by a concrete raft.

Bricks are delivered to the nearest road side which is a four or five minute walk through the coconut groves. When construction work is going on in the village, the ladies work as labourers to supplement family income. The ladies transport the bricks to our site from the road side.

The red bricks probably weigh around 20 kilos each but the ladies carry them very gracefully on their heads and place them on the ground where construction is to take place.

We purchased a wheel barrow but they were not happy about that!

Before we are permitted to demolish the old building, we have to commence work on the new structure which is virtually an extension of the old one - but the old building needs to be stronger to support the Yoga Shala and therefore must be renewed.

Here you can see the measuring and marking out of ground for the foundations.

The neighbours offer advice - including little Harsha.

The foundation trenches are dug out.

Pipes running through the site present a small problem.

These run from a new well we have constructed which helps to keep our water supply topped up.

Another tree to be saved. The two ayurveda rooms are being constructed either side of it.
